Vegan Food Samadi Canggu Bali

A Day of Vegan Delights in Canggu Bali

4 mins read

I always say it’s easier to be a vegan in Indonesia, as our national foods are Tempeh and Tahu—two vegan staples.

On a recent trip to Bali, I decided to test this highly biased claim with no basis whatsoever by being kind of a vegan for a day. Oh, and a disclaimer: I use the term very loosely because, aside from being mindful about the food, I didn’t take note of the products that I used otherwise.

Being vegan, I decided, should start with a healthy breakfast, and that’s how we ended up in Samadi’s eatery.

I gave Fafa the choice to try something else; this observant vegan day thingy was mine, and he shouldn’t have to be forced to abide by it. But after seeing the choices at the Samadi food stall, he, too, decided to try the vegan meal.

While in Bali…“, he justified.

The options were plenty, and I got excited when I saw Biryani Rice. I am always up for ethnic food culture amalgamation.

I got Biryani, tempura mushroom, falafel, soy sauce tempeh and Sambal Matah. Meanwhile, Fafa also got Biryani rice and Sambal Matah, but he opted for broccoli and vegan omelette. We also ordered drinks—iced tea for me and lemon iced tea for him.

The food was abundant and delicious, and as we ate, the place slowly filled up, primarily with tourists.

After the meal, we contemplated trying the Velato (Vegan Gelato), but we were so stuffed we opted for coffee at Samadi Cafe instead. There, I had the darkest flat white of my life—also vegan.

The rest of the day was filled with drinking coconut water, getting a massage, and chilling by the pool—all vegan activities.

For dinner, we decided to check out Oma Jamu Vegan. The place was just two shops away from our Airbnb, and though we had planned to eat, we realized we were still full from the hearty meal this morning and snacks throughout the day. So we just got a bottle of Temulawak Jamu—good for indigestion—and returned home.

I think I should try at least one more vegan place before concluding that being a vegan in Bali, at least in Canggu, is more accessible. But a vegan friend did try OMG Jamu, and he loved it. So, considering his testimony, I guess it’s easier to be a vegan in Bali.

If you are a vegan/vegetarian, consider visiting Bali, Indonesia, for your next culinary adventure. And if you are not a vegan/vegetarian, I’d still recommend trying vegan food in Bali because good food is good food.
