Bali Diary Day 6: In Da Compound Warung, Jamu Making and Liap Liap Dinner

3 mins read

I started my morning in Ubud with yoga with Cok – the hotel’s yoga instructor.

I also made sure to squeeze in some pool time this morning to celebrate a break from remote working duty for the next four days. I worked, wrote and drank some Balinese cocktails. Even then, I want to say that working remotely isn’t all it was painted to be.

I wanted our last or second-last lunch in Ubud (we are moving to Canggu tomorrow) to be good. Then I was reminded by our friend Sonal’s recommendation – In Da Compound Warung.

So we took an Uber from the hotel to be dropped off at the De Compound ten minutes later – it was too hot to walk). We each ordered Nasi Campur with a side of Bakwan Ayam (Chicken Fritters); I didn’t even know Chicken Fritters were a thing as I grew up eating only Bakwan Udang or Bakwan Jagung. The food at De Compound was good but not spicy enough for our taste buds. The whole thing with drinks cost us $20.

By the way, this De Compound place is a homestay and still worth checking out if you are after an affordable stay in Ubud.

In the afternoon, I attended a private Jamu-making class.

We went to Liap Liap for dinner because Fafa wanted to try it there. We ordered Ikan Kuah Asam (Hot and Sour Fish Stew), Jimbaran grilled fish, and crab curry. It could just be the first crab I have eaten in Bali. The food, including the rice, turned out to be unique, and I learned that I could never eat only one portion of rice in Bali. The only callout is that the tables they gave us needed to be larger for the amount of food we ordered, and they could have put it on an empty table.

After dinner, we returned to the hotel and packed halfway. The Canggu Airbnb, where we will be staying next, is sending someone to pick us up from this hotel tomorrow afternoon.

After this, I am going to soak and sleep soon.
