Tokyo Tsukiji Fish Market, the biggest fish wholesale market in the world, closed for business on 6th October 2018. They marked the occasion with one last world-famed Tsukiji market tuna auction on that weekend. Though I don’t live in Japan, I have feelings about the closure of the market.
Many Visits To Tokyo Tsujiki Fish Market
The first time I went to Japan, I put Tsukiji Market Tuna Auction into my itinerary, unfortunately, it was closed on the day I planned to visit it.
The second time I was in Tokyo, I did a little research, took a taxi at 4 AM from the hotel and finally reached Tsukiji Fish Market, only to be informed that the tuna auction session for the day had been closed.
100 dollars poorer and utterly disappointed, I decided to queue for 3 hours, scored a chair at the world-famous Sushi Dai and had the best sushi in my life before 9 AM. It was worth it.
Finally, the third time, I came extra prepared. I booked a hotel beside the Tsukiji Fish Market and qued for the auction from 1 AM.
After waiting for 4 hours I finally get to see the world-famous tuna auction. Never mind I was dead tired, I was on ground zero of Japan’s 80 years old tradition. It was one of the happiest days of my life. I also ended up eating sushi for breakfast again, this time at Iwasa Sushi.
Tsukiji Outer Market
My wish is for the Tsukiji market to not be a thing of the past. There are still many things you can do in the outer market. you can have a delicious breakfast at the best sushi restaurants in the world and even sit at one of the modernized coffee shops to look at the world pass by.
Tsukiji market also is a great place to get homeware souvenirs, especially knives. Japanese knife is well known for its’ quality featuring first-class craftsmanship. So why not ship yourself one? or if you stay in a place where you can cook, be a local for the day and get something fresh from here to be served at your dinner table tonight.
