The Long Overdue Visit To Sydney Fish Market Australia

3 mins read

I have always wanted to visit the Sydney Fish Market ever since I visited Australia for the first time years ago, but it was vetoed by my cousins. Because, as they said, who would fly across the continent to visit a fish market?

The thing is a market, especially the fish market has always been on the top to visit list whenever I travel to a new place. Maybe because I was born in a fisherman’s village. I am not too sure, but I have always been interested in local markets. So now, almost four years later, I, who would even fly across the world for it, finally got to tick Sydney Fish Market off of my list.

Compared to the fish markets I have been to in Asia, Sydney Fish Market lacked variety. Two types of seafood that caught my attention on that day were the rows of Alaskan crabs and black ink-covered squids. But a good thing about The Sydney fish market is that it’s quite patron-friendly. It’s relatively small, clean and well-organized. You can spend a couple of hours there by yourself, roaming and grabbing a quick bite.

A Seafood Meal by the Pier at Sydney Fish Market

Most of the seafood stalls offer the cooked option. Buy fresh seafood from them and they cook it on the spot for you. There is also pre-cooked seafood, which makes no difference if you are like me, who doesn’t have a clue on how to check the freshness of the seafood. Or if you want to cut the queue and get a head start binge-ing on deliciously cooked seafood, as I did.

Some of the stalls also displayed sushi platters, but I don’t think sushi is their forte. If you are craving for raw seafood, try the seafood platter instead. It would be hard to get fresher oysters anywhere else in the city.

My favourite dish at Sydney Fish Market was the barbequed lobster. It was pretty delicious for a lobster, which usually has a bland, non-existing taste.

BBQ seafood is perfect during the cold months in the Southern hemisphere. Also, anything barbequed is the Aussie way to enjoy a meal. When you are in Sydney, have some time to spare and are done with the sight of the Sydney Opera House, do visit the market. Weekdays and right before lunchtime would be the best bet. That way, you are guaranteed a seat by the pier.
