Known for its’ reputable owner and for being “perfectly” feng shui-ed, Penang Blue Mansion stood tall in indigo blue.
Fat Tze, the owner of this mansion, was a poor young immigrant from mainland China who once said one day he would provide provision for everyone, and he soon did – kind of like Rajinikanth in the movie Padayappa ━ that’s a Tamil movie reference for all my non-Tamilan readers. He became very affluent and well respected and was named “Rockefeller of the East”.
Penang Blue Mansion
A luxurious mansion with mixed Chinese and Western architecture, Penang Blue Mansion is magnificent. Built-in the 19th century, it has 38 rooms, five courtyards, seven staircases, and 48 European stained glass windows. 38 rooms!!! Even Brangelina’s chateau in France only has 35 rooms.
Fat Tze built the same kind of house in Thailand, Indonesia, and other places, but Penang Blue Mansion in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, remained the grandest.
Although pretty, the 3-D wall decorations and stained glasses of Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion didn’t interest me as much as the many feng shui symbols all over the house. There were bats, pineapples and butterflies carvings around the house.
He built this house to face the sea with a mountain (Penang Hill) to its rear. This is considered a promising position. The open courtyard in the middle of the house also lets air and sunlight come abundantly into the house.
The Blue Mansion is quite illustrious in that it has been used to shoot a few movies; the famous ones were French Indochine and The Blue Mansion.
The best part of Penang Blue Mansion today is that we can stay there for MYR 500 per night! If only I had known this earlier, I would have stayed here. I was spending a night and waking up in a more than a hundred-year-old mansion! Imagine all the rooms to explore, courtyards to chill, and ambiences to soak in. I would have relished it.
