The first time I was in Hong Kong, more than 4 years ago, our friend took us out for a Hong Kong local breakfast. It was a combination of toast, egg, and coffee. It tasted really good. ‘Til date it’s one of my best local breakfast memories.
The Search for the Ultimate Hong Kong Local Breakfast
This is my second time in Hong Kong, so far I have had both Hong Kong local breakfast and the Western version of Hong Kong Local breakfast
Macaroni Soup with Ham
The traditional Hong Kong local breakfast is called Cha Chang Teng. It includes bread, noodle, macaroni soup, and fried egg, accompanied by milk tea. I know it sounds like a lot, but it really is a must-try. After fueling yourself with it, you will be ready to explore the city.
We queued up at the Australia Dairy Company at Kowloon island for a little while before going into this hectic restaurant. I ordered macaroni soup and Hong Kong-style tea.
Here you will get to taste the local meal while sitting elbow to elbow with strangers. Most of them sit, order, eat/slurp the food, pay and get out of the place in less than 15 minutes. It felt like we were in the middle of an eating sprint, and that too not in a good way. If you want to get a taste of local food culture, head here.
Coffee and Croissant
Located smack in the middle of Causeway Bay, it’s hard to miss the Coffee Academics. A famous and well-reviewed coffee shop. And I say, don’t miss it. It has become a mainstream coffee shop for some reasons and those reasons can be found in its fabulous décor, coffee, and the crowd. What else do you want from a coffee shop? A window seat facing the street for some people watching, checked. Great music playing in the background, checked. Alternatives for your not-a-coffee-drinker friends, checked.
Hong Kong Style Egg Tart
Also allocate some time to sample at least two out of the top three egg tart shops in Hong Kong, because what’s the point of going to Hong Kong if you don’t try their famous egg tarts? My personal recommendation is Tai Cheong Bakery. If perfect is a taste, this would be it.
