The beautiful Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki held a special Frida Kahlo exhibition when I was there for a work trip, and I made sure to visit.
I think one shouldn’t go to the gallery to experience everything but to pick and choose a few things and themes to enjoy. So this time, even though I had never been to Toi o Tāmaki, I purposely limited my attention to the celebrated Frida Kahlo. Tbh, I didn’t know much about Frida Kahlo other than she became a pop culture icon a few years ago – as they called it, Kahlomania.
She means something different to everyone: some are drawn to the details of Kahlo’s remarkable biography, and others to her art. For many, her life and art are inextricably linked.
Imagining Kahlo now
Indeed, this exhibition gave me a deeper appreciation of Frida as she showcased Mexican culture, from featuring it in her paintings to showcasing it in her vibrant fashion style. I could relate to some parts of her, from her female friendships to her struggle to be recognized as a woman artist.
I was also delightfully surprised to see Patti Smith’s photographs of Kahlo showcased in the gallery.
After the Kahlo exhibition, I was ready to go, telling myself if I wanted to see more, I could always return the next time I was in Auckland. Before leaving, I visited the museum gift shop and saw Robin White Fish and Chips Maketu painting on a postcard. The artwork spoke to me so much that I went back to the second level and spent another hour admiring her artworks, especially the ones with buildings on them. I left with my artsy cup filled to the brim. Ready to find a place nearby to have a late lunch.
