After the tour guide shared the story of Ekberg, Helsinki’s iconic bakery, we decided we had to visit—especially to try the famous Runeberg cake, a namesake treat created by the Finnish poet’s wife for his sweet tooth.
But… there were a few buts, dear readers…
First of all, we didn’t go to the original Ekberg Café.
We end up at the newer, deli-style Ekberg café beside it (not the authentic experience, in my purist traveler opinion).
Secondly, the Runeberg cake isn’t available.
“It’s seasonal,” the lady at the counter replied.
Still, this moment will be forever etched in my mind.

We each chose our treat — Apple Crumble Danish for me and Korvapuusti (cinammon roll) for Fafa.
Then, we took a seat by the window.
The place is quiet—perfect for people-watching. The tram passes just a meter from us. It feels kind of intimate, sitting by the window and taking it all in.
But more than all of that—my oh my—it’s the best Danish I’ve ever tasted in my life.

You know those moments when the food is so good, it opens up a whole new category in your personal food memory?
Like Zaru Soba in Yanaka, Tokyo.
Ramen from an unnamed hole-in-the-wall, also in Tokyo.
A warm chocolate croissant in Paris.
And now—a Danish in Helsinki.
It’s magical.
I’m so happy—maybe it’s just the sugar high.

Either way, hello from Ekberg.
I’m in love.
