Aside from Japan, I am not one to repeat my travel destination. My reason is simple – there are too many more destinations and cultures that I yearn to experience in this lifetime. I am also not someone who always enjoys the places I travel to; Some cities and I just don’t vibe, and I am okay with that. A case in point is HCMC, Phuket, and even Gili – these cities could be a paradise for some, just not mine.
But here I am, a month shy of my Europe trip, questioning my time in Denmark – why didn’t I enjoy it nearly as much as I thought I’d? Could this be a me-problem instead of Denmark and the Danes?
I went to Denmark with a dream of visiting Lykkemuseet, The Happiness Museum and meeting one of my heroes, Meik Wiking, but it was closed during the period of my visit. So was Tivoli Garden, which was the only must-visit in Copenhagen recommendation from both Aina and Jen.
Instead of doing the above, I got a Viking boat tattoo on my feet, ate the best Thai food I have ever had in Europe and got blind drunk at the Tivoli Food Hall. The last was unplanned and later informed by my credit card statement as quite an expensive affair.
Though I didn’t regret doing what I did instead, I feel like I missed out on Denmark. As it didn’t feel like the Denmark, I had in mind, having devoured many Hygge-related books.
I am so glad that I got to stay in one of the fanciest hotels in my life, overlooking the stunning Copenhagen city skyline, courtesy of my cousin. Still, I wonder whether I’d have gotten the Hygge vibes I have been chasing by staying in an Airbnb instead.
One of my best memory of Denmark was the food tour we had on the last day. However, it was followed by cutting the tour session short as we had to rush to the hotel to get our luggage to fly back to Amsterdam to catch our flight back to Jakarta and Melbourne, respectively. I wonder whether we should have extended our stay to enjoy the incredible fascinating tour properly, especially since it was supposed to end at the trendy hipster neighbourhood that would get just right up my alley. Or better yet, should we have done the Meet The Danes experience?
As I said earlier, I am not one to repeat my travel destination, but I will make an exception this time, to remark m Denmark experience.
