While staying in our Zurich Airbnb, I made a short stop at Bürklimäärt, the weekly market at Bürkliplatz. The first thing I noticed about Bürklimäärt was the vibe. People were smiling, greeting each other and making small conversation. The sight made me feel welcomed.
I loved how colourful everything was at Bürklimäärt. It was truly a treat for the eyes.
The most crowded part of the market was the vegetable stands. The fruit and veggies were happy and juicy looking.
I then saw the flower stands, gorgeous multi-coloured flowers which I had never seen in real life before, like orange-red and pink-white roses. I would have loved to have bought some to put in our Airbnb in the suburb nearby, but the thought of walking around the city with a backpack and a bunch of flowers the whole day didn’t seem like a good idea.
They had house plants, also wreaths and other Christmas-related decorations.
Sampling food at Bürklimäärt
There was plenty of food to sample. A nice man offered me some salami, while another gave me a small scoop of fresh jam. I wasn’t sure whether these were supposed to be eaten together. I did it anyway and surprisingly, they complimented each other. After thanking them profusely for their kindness and openness to sharing their food and culture with this foreign girl, I hopped on the train to the city.
I didn’t buy anything at the Bürklimäärt because I didn’t know how to bargain (do they even bargain in Switzerland?). Also, I only carried very little cash also putting a jar of jam in my backpack didn’t seem like a good idea, especially since I am planning to go back to our Zurich Airbnb only at night.
If I ever get the chance to live near a weekly market*, I’d make a regular visit. I’d get flowers, engage in small talk, sample all the free salami, and buy a bag full of chilli olives.
What is the best weekend market to visit in your city?
*Update: I am currently living a stone's throw away from Prahran Market, a cultural icon of Melbourne city.
