“Try to make your breasts* bigger… longer,” Eric, the Adda Yoga teacher, told us while we were trying not to break from our Half Lotus Tree pose before continuing with, “remember the intention you set at the beginning of the class“.
With that, my floating leg tripped back to the mat.
Adda Yoga Canggu Bali
Located on the rooftop of a coworking space, Adda Yoga is one of the highly-rated yoga studios in Canggu, Bali, and it’s only minutes from our Airbnb.
One morning, after checking out the class schedule and the teacher (don’t tell me I am the only one who stalked my yoga teachers), I decided to check out Adda Yoga.
I reached the open-air studio by climbing the three-story-long spiral staircase.
Another class was in session. It was also taught by Eric, who ‘blends spirituality with yoga movements’ as stated on social media.
My first impression of the teacher and the class was that both were intimidating. Also, it looked like I would be the only student for the next class. A private yoga class when I still needed to adjust my Warrior Two pose constantly was intimidating!! But I was already there, and the class overlooked the rice field. It seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime not-to-be-missed class. So I decided to stick with the plan.
While the previous class was doing Savasana, Eric came to check if I was there to attend the next class. I said yes and handed him my KTP (Indonesian ID).
There is a price difference for the class between locals (identified solely by KTP) and foreigners. Glad to have carried my KTP every day in my wallet for the last seven years living in Melbourne for the 5AUD discount I got on that day.
Soon after the previous class was dismissed, I went to the yoga class side — also open-air.
Aussies in Adda Yoga
Fortunately, I wasn’t the only student in the class. There was Niel, a surfer from NSW, and Carl, a project manager from the Northern Territory (who suffered from heatstroke and was advised to do yoga), completing our group of mismatched Aussies (Eric is French Australian).
Eric began the class by saying, “Yoga is all about your breast*” — Breath he meant breath, which sounded like “breast” in my Indonesian ears with his French accent.
He then continued with, “If you don’t have control over your breast, you’re just doing stretching“, before asking us to set an intention for the yoga class today- “…only if you want”, he added the typical hipster disclaimer.
Eric took us through many different poses, and he also repeated something that I learned and very much questioned in my first yoga class: that the Downward Dog is a resting pose.
My intention for the day was to let go of all the negativity attached to the year. It was the last day of the year, which seemed like a fitting intention. Between sweating profoundly and trying to mimic Eric while focusing on my Drishti (yoga focus point), I would like to think I somewhat managed to let go of the bad Juju I had carried throughout the year.
I felt so much lighter than I was before during Savasana. With that, I left my emotional baggage, thanked Eric, and took the spiral stairs down to join the real world in the soon-coming new year.
I am torn between recommending Samadi Yoga and Adda Yoga.
I’d say if you are in Bali as a digital nomad, Adda Yoga might be a better option, as there are coworking spaces in the same building. Also, the Awan Cafe downstairs is pretty secluded if you prefer to not pay for the coworking space. One last thing: even though I did the yoga class in the morning, I think the yoga class here during sunset would be so much better to induce a Zen-er sensation.
