Berlin Beer Garden Das Lemke Germany

Pints and Pizza at Berlin Beer Garden Das Lemke

One sunny afternoon, after spending a little too much time exploring Dead Chicken Alley, we found ourselves standing in front of the Das Lemke—conveniently tucked beneath a train station. Even though I’m not much of a beer drinker, I felt compelled to check it out. A beer-loving friend from Australia had insisted I visit at least one, warning me not to return home without the experience.

Alright-ey, Nikki—this one’s for you.

Das Lemke has an open-air courtyard—a beer garden—that felt like a sanctuary, even for someone like me, who doesn’t usually go for beer.

Fafa and I each ordered a beer. At our shared table, a family from Texas went all in with a beer flight, sampling a variety of options.

My Summer beer had a subtle hint of melon and turned out to be refreshingly perfect for such a hot day. It easily made it onto my (very short) list of beers I actually enjoy.

But what truly stole the show for me that day? The German beer “snacks.”

Berlin Beer Garden Snacks are The Ultimate Comfort Food

Flammkuchen (German Pizza)

I’d read about German “pizza” on a few blogs but kept my expectations low. I imagined something heavy, meaty, and dense—essentially, a no-nonsense German twist on pizza. What arrived, however, was a revelation.

Flammkuchen, as it’s called, is incredibly thin, topped generously with onions and a sprinkle of bacon, then baked to crisp perfection. One bite was all it took—I immediately declared to Fafa that I could eat this every day for the rest of our trip. The light, crispy crust and veggie-forward toppings even tricked me into feeling like I was making a healthy choice. I’m now determined to learn how to recreate it back home.

The other snack we tried was a noodle-like dish topped with pickled onions. At first glance, I wasn’t impressed—it looked fine but nothing special. Then I took a bite. Game changer. It was warm, rich, and the kind of carb-loaded comfort food I didn’t know I needed.

Before leaving, we made a pact to return the next day—a no-brainer, considering it was just a short walk from Dead Chicken Alley.

Beer gardens hadn’t been on my original Berlin bucket list, but they’ve definitely earned a spot now—beer lover or not.

While Prague is known for its beer halls, Berlin has its own beer culture, with some spots offering the quintessential beer garden experience—it’s not to be skipped.

Das Lemke address:  S-Bahnbogen 143, Dircksenstraße, 10178 Berlin, Germany — it's located at a tourist spot called Hackescher Markt.
