Here are my random and very biased observations on Auckland. Do you agree with any of them? Or do share if you have any to add to the list.
Some cities are enjoyable as travel destinations, while others are truly appreciated when you live in them. Jakarta, Melbourne, and my temporary home these days, Auckland, fall into the latter category-in that it can be boring for tourists but interesting for the locals.
There is a disproportionate amount of Korean restaurants in CBD. And most of them are good.
You should spend at least a few hours at Toi o Tāmaki i, Auckland Art Gallery.
Auckland is hilly. It’s the hilliest city I have ever been to.
New Zealand jade carvings are some of the best souvenirs you can buy from here.
Lylo Hotel is worth staying at.
Remedy Cafe is a great place for a solo date.
Eden Noodles is the best cheap-but-delicious restaurant in the CBD.
Auckland has the best Balinese food I have ever eaten outside of Bali.
It also has pretty great bookstores, from The Unity in the CBD to The Lamplight Books.
Giapo ice cream truly is Instagram-worthy.
If you are after a spot-on fusion, check out Bulgogi Spagetthi at SimonandLee in Parnell.
Sandringham is a must-visit neighbourhood in Auckland for some South Asian delight.
New Zealand wine is not as good as Australian wine.
Fruits are more expensive here than in Melbourne. Actually, almost everything in the grocery store is more expensive.
