Salzburg Is the fairy tale must-visit pocket of Austria. I had a plan for Vienna, something related to eating the world-famous Sacher Torte; Meanwhile, I went without any expectations to Salzburg.
On our first morning there, we crossed the bridge and explored Old Town Salzburg, where the Hohensalzburg Castle located. It was my first castle ever! And I finally got to tick one more point from my bucket list.
Mozart and Cafe Tomaselli
The musical genius, Mozart, was born and brought up in Salzburg. His house is also located in the old town, but we didn’t go inside. Instead, we went to Cafe Tomaselli located nearby, which was frequented by Mozart himself during his days. We ordered coffee, cake, and wine.
It was kept in the old-fashioned ways; there was a lady who brought a tray of cakes for us to choose and pay on the spot, which was separated from paying for the rest of the things we had at the end of the meal; to the walking cashier with readily prepared bills for change in the long wallet he carried. We sat there for quite some time, soaking up the vintage atmosphere of the place. It was nice, reminded me of La Closerie de Lilas in Paris.
Sound of Music
I have a confession to make, I haven’t watched The Sound of Music. I tried to, even after we came back from Europe, but I just, can’t take it. Musical shows always bore me to death.
When my cousins got excited about the Mirabell Garden where the kids were singing in the movie, or about the Von Trapp house, I was like “wow, pretty garden” and “wow, green lake“. I didn’t break into a song every 10 minutes as the tour guide and half of the people I shared the bus with did.
Souvenirs from Salzburg
The most famous from Salzburg is MozartKugel. It’s a confection made of pistachio, nougat, and dark chocolate, originally created over a century ago adapting the name of the great composer.
There were quaint little towns and villages in Salzburg with the scenic Alps surrounding that offered something to marvel at. Salzburg is definitely worth visiting, even if you are not into Sound of Music at all.
